This thesis comments on the present fault location methods at first. Then the faultlocation methods are discussed and researched furtherly. The majority of work that ispresented in this thesis is as follows:   Based on distributed-parameters nodal admittance equation of transmission line,theequation with fault distance is established according to fault types, then fault distance can beacquired with searching method. The fault location method uses phase coordinate (a b c)parameters. EMTP simulation results show that the method can precisely locate the fault site.This thesis also presents a method to solve two terminal sampling unsynchronized angle, andthe method has been verified using the EMTP simulation and calculation for transmission line.On the basis of above proposed fault location method and the state of compensation devicewhile fault occurs, this thesis presents a new accurate fault location algorithm for seriescompensation lines. The algorithm is composed of two subroutines, EMTP simulations showthat the fault location ofthealgorithm is accurate. This thesis analyzes and calculates the influence of HV transmission lines sagon line parameters. Through lots of simulations, this thesis also analyzes the error oflocation results resulted from the influence .
