Engineering rock and soil mass, which was formed by the action of naturalgeology during the long and long geological history, has such complicated physicalstates that none of man-made materials can compare with it at all. The static anddynamic properties of rock and soil mass are all closely related to its material fabricsand physical states. The rock and soil mass is the existence, and its static and dynamicproperties are two kinds of different exhibition for the existence. So there must besome kind of relationships between the static properties and the dynamic properties ofthe rock and soil mass, and the foundation of the relationships is just made of thematerial constitutions and physical states of the rock and soil mass. Though elastic wave tests are widely used in engineering, the understandingabout the propagating laws of the elastic waves in complex media is still very far fromclearness. Therefore, it is very significant to study the relationships between the staticand dynamic elastic parameters and their variety laws. Combined with the projects of Antaibao Coal Mine slope and Guyueqiao culturalrelic protection, a series of tests such as the wave velocity test in situ of Guyueqiao,the physical property test and the static mechanical test as well as the ultrasonic wavetest of the rock specimens from these fields and other places are carried out.According to the test data of rock specimens, the relationships between elastic wavevelocities and physical parameters of rock specimens are researched. It is revealed by the analysis of synthetic test data both from rock specimens andsoil specimens that the test values of elastic wave velocities and medium densities ofthe specimens are in the state of chaos in the parameter space of wave velocity-density.The chaos state is displayed as three kinds of relativity, i.e., the relativity betweenwhole order and local disorder; the relativity between the definite positions andstructures of individual distribution regions and the random distribution of the testvalues in an individual distribution region; and the relativity between the disorder ofall specimen values and the order of every kind of specimen values in an individualdistribution region. In addition, from the space structures of specimen distributionregions to the distribution patterns of every kind of specimens in an individualdistribution region, the obvious self-comparability exists in the distribution pattern oftest values of elastic wave velocities and medium densities. It is significant tounderstand these kinds of relativity and the self-comparability in order to apply themin practical engineering and to push the theoretical study on the properties of rock andsoil mass to a higher level.
