Because of the similarity between the construction of a magnetic bearing and that of a motor stator, the bearingless motor combines the radial magnetic suspension force windings into a conventional motor so that the rotor shaft may suspend and rotate at the time. Bearingless motors have the advantages of no abrasion, no friction, no lubrication, robustness and so on. The application of bearingless technology into the Switched Reluctance Motor may greatly alleviate the vibration and noise problem. The mathematical model of the Bearingless Switched Reluctance Motor (BSRM) is discussed in detail, with the rotor having radial displacements. The control strategy of the BSRM under no load condition is analyzed. The experimental results verify that the rotor shaft may be successfully suspended under no load condition. Having summarized the control strategy of the BSRM with load, a new method to deduce the ideal current in main windings and the ideal advanced angle is proposed. The experimental results indicate that the rotor shaft can be successfully suspended with radial force load by adapting the new method.
