The urban-rural ecotone is an area that is influenced by the urbanization process. The study of landscape patterns and dynamics within the urban-rural ecotone with remote sensing and GIS is useful of the spational features of the ecotone and the succession of landscape factors as indicators of the relationship between urbanization and ecological process. The study area situats in the south of Fuzhou, and is 117.87km2. The study area is a typical urban-rural ecotone in terms of urban spatial expansion of Fuzhou. All the data came from the color and infrared aerial photos of Fuzhou, which included photos of 1986 and photos of 2000. The main procedures of studying the Nantai Islandr were made up of five parts. Firsetly, the study area was divided into 5 primary landscape types and 14 secondary landscape types, according to its image characters in the digital remote sensing image and definite disposal manner, by using remote sensing software ERDAS, and geographic information systems (GIS) software. Then Nantai Island's different landscapes of two times'remote information and attribute data were picked up and systemic analyzed, through the Arc View GIS (geographic information systems) software and landscape analysis software Fragstats. And then every landscape types' landscape patterns and dynamics was contrast analyzed, by applying landscape indices on the bace of the theory of ecological principles. The analysis indices of landscape pattern were made up of two levels' indices. One level's indices baced landscape type, mainly included"Proportion of Patch Area" "Patch Size", "Patch Shape Index"etc, the orther level's indices baced landscape, mainly included"Separation Index", "Perimeter Desity", "Fragmention Index", "Diversity Index"etc. Then, the rules of each time's landscape pattern and dynamics of urban-rural ecotone in Nantai Island were drawn, and the main reasons that caused landscape pattern to change greatly were explained, through these landscape indices. Lastly, some rational advice about landscape planning is provided for Nantai Island.Landscape pattern changed dramatically during the past 14 years. The urban-rural construction land area was increased rapidly, and its area in 2000 was almost 1.2 times more than that in 1986,with the greatly decrease of cultivated land, grass and water. At the same time, we can find that the landscape indices which been used to analyze landscape pattern were also changed greatly. Mean Patch Size (MPS) was also increased with the decrease of The Number of Patches (NP) in the study area. The Fragmention Index and Separation Index separation that reflected landscape component spatial distribution characteristics were gradually decreased. And the diversity indices of the total study area were added piece by piece for the fourteen-year period. It is concluded that the main driving forces causing landscape pattern change in Nantai Island included the improment of industrialization and urbanization, the increase of population, the government's planning and the geographic environment. In conclusion, the status and function of the urban-rural ecotone in the urbanization area was in need of definition and description. The assessment of these features can establish a baseline for discussion of an equitable landscape pattern and open space that are necessary to develop a natural ecological system in a dense urban environment and to improve regional ecological function.
