Damage identification of structures is a popular and important subject of engineering today. The basic idea behind this technology is that modal parameters(notably frequencies, mode shape, and modal damping) are functions of physical properties of the structure (mass, damping, and stiffness); therefore ,changes in the physical properties will cause detectable changes in the modal properties. Damage identification technology of civil engineering are aerospace, and mechanical engineering by origin ,and has been rapidly expanding over the last few years to meet the characteristics and demands of civil engineering itself . However, its applications are yet very few,and study on experiment and method with regard to large-scale spatial structures are yet not carryed out. With the experiment conducted at Southeast University in October 2003 on a model of the OlympicGames stadium , severl issues concerning the up question is studied. The process and relative theories of the experiment is described, gain and loss of this experiment is summarized, conclusions about damage detection are presented. Some suggestions are also given to experiments in the future.Dynamic properties of the structure is analyzed, and by this means the way that the vibration characteristics of large-scale spatial structures changes with some kinds of factors are studied.Push-over analysis is applied on the model using finite element method, and brought some available result.Based on the brown study of the status quo of the study and application of damage identification method in civil engineering ,the article provide some practical suggestions to the using of damage identification method in large-scale spatial structures. Some typical vibration-based damage identification methods are described , followed with the consideration of their application to the model of the OlympicGames stadium . And as a example, the MSCM method is run by a finite element software.
