In this paper, the problem and harm of between hamonics and reactive power are listed first. The working principle and technology characteristics of a hybrid active power filter are introduced. For harmonic suppression and reactive power compensation of high power nonlinear load, method of parallel operation of hybrid filter and capacitor banks is proposed. The stability ,compensating characteristics and current detection methods to improve the performance of harmonic suppression are analyzed. The calculation results with the proposed methods are reasonable agreement with simulation data. The application of parallel operation of hybrid active power filter and capacitor banks in practical project is achieved. With the results obtained, its prominent effect in harmonic suppression and reactive power compensation is demonstrated. Based on the on-site operational experiences of hybrid active power filter with capacitor banks in parallel, new methods of high power harmonic suppression and reactive power compensation are proposed.
