The development of information technology creates an increasingdemand of information storage media. Especially in magnetic recordingmedia, the thermal stability of recording signal and tribological propertiesare important factors that have influence on the further increasing ofmagnetic recording technology. With the multiple function scanningprobe microscope, the recording bits and tribological properties of severalmagnetic disks have been investigated. Several achievements have beenobtained as following:1. Recording bit patterns of the disks are investigated by magnetic force microscope, showing that different disks have different bit patterns, at higher temperature, signal decay of recording bits has been observed as a result of domain reversing, and the amount of reversed domains increases with waiting time at higher temperature.2. With lateral force microscope and lateral modulation friction force microscope, tribological properties of the disks have been investigated, the results of the two methods proved that the friction image is corresponding to the profile of topography. The microtribology study of IBM glass disk shows a logarithmic decrease of friction force with increasing scanning velocity. Under ambient conditions capillary forces play a role, the adhesive force between the tip and sample is larger than that in vacuum and water. The adhesive force in water is smallest. The friction forces under three conditions have the same order.
