With application costs decreasing of power cable and rebuilding of power network, power cable is being widely used. But, until now, there have not efficient methods on power cable fault location. Through research on principle and approach, this paper summarize the merit and defect of all kinds of methods in power cable fault location. Then point out the localization and applicability of each methods.This paper is a theory research on technology of power cables fault location . It is based on conventional transmission line model. We adopt finite element method, think over the mutual inductance of each sect circuitry in finity cables. Then educe the new wave equation. And then adopt the measure of numerical value analyse.This method consider the heterogeneous character of transmission line, we analyse the character of fault location wave,it is based on the transient process of electromagnetic wave, so we make the result be closed to the practice.Moreover, The methods above have been simulated using VC++7.0, and the simulation result is low resistance fault\high resistance fault\open circuit fault. According to change the parameter of the power cables (power cables length, account step, impulse width, fault location). Especially we talk about the high resistance fault. According to the simulation graph and project practice, this paper sum up all kinds of rules.
