In this paper, the flow mechanism and the applications of thrust vectoring using synthetic jet are studied in theory, numerical simulation and experiment. The application of adjacent actuator and actuator at an angle to the vector control of primary jet is the most important innovation in this paper. Compared with ordinary actuator, the two types of actuators can have a good control effect. The main work embodied as follows.(1) To study the mechanism of reaction between synthetic jet and primary jet, the comparison between different simplified models of actuators and the simulation of flow field caused by synthetic jet and primary jet by 2D numerical methods are made, which are some main work in the paper. By analysis we come to the following conclusions. First, the primary jet direction can be changed against the actuator when it passes over actuator, with velocity increased. But in the downstream the results reverse. The pressure difference on the wall between actuator and the exit of primary jet is great. Second, in push mode jet penetration is direct to the velocity amplitude ratio of membrane and primary jet and inverse to Strouhal number. Third, in pull mode the configurable parameter such as the distance from the exit of primary jet to synthetic jet actuator and the working parameter such as the velocity amplitude ratio of membrane and primary jet, oscillatory frequency have the optimal value which changes regularly by other parameters.(2) The flow field caused by primary jet and two adjacent actuators with different phase difference, amplification and frequency is simulated and the mechanism is studied. We find that the actuator closer to primary jet has a more effect on primary jet. The phase difference has an optimal value when the phase of actuator closer to primary jet is advanced. The effect of frequency ratio and velocity amplitude ratio on primary jet is complicated and with frequency ratio increased, the primary jet deflected angles change nonlinearly.(3) The simulation of flow field caused by primary jet and synthetic jet by actuator at an angle is the second important work in the paper. The angle has an optimal value and has effect on the optimal value of configurable parameter and working parameter. The actuator at an angle can change greatly the primary jet direction and has a good effect on thrust vectoring without increasing input power.(4) Designed the synthetic jet actuators and the testing system. Experimented it in quiescent air, and analyzed the actuator's influence factors, such as actuator's exit-slot, voltage wave shape, pressing states of membrane, membrane's number and geometric dimension of actuator. The results agreed with the conclusions that made from theory analysis and numerical simulation.
