With the government regulations on automotive emissions becomemore and more strict, traditional mechanical fuel injection systems are noteasy to meet the needs of EURO III emission regulations, and theelectronically controlled fuel injection systems are good choices to resolvethe problem. Now the electronically controlled fuel injection systems, suchas electronic unit pump system (EUP) and electronic high-pressure commonrail system (CR), are concerned interestedly by homeland diesel enginemanufactures. Compared with the CR fuel injection systems, the EUPsystem is more suitable for application in China in view of the insufficientlydeveloped basic industry, diesel engine manufactures status and thelimitation of fuel quality.The aim of this paper is to research and develop a diesel engine,which fuel injection system is EUP developed by Yuchai machinery Co.,Chengdu Wit Electric Fuel Injection System Co. and Tsinghua University.The R&D process includes design of mechanical hardware, performance testof fuel injection system, development of combustion system and calibrationof control MAPs. Then the sample diesel engine has passed Europe IIIemission regulations, and small-batch production has been achieved.This paper detailedly describes the EUP system, includes: hardwareinstallation, performance test of EUP, combustion system development,calibration of the MAPs for engine management and on-road calibration.The test results show that the diesel engine with the EUP FIE meets theneeds of the Europe III emission regulations without the help of EGR andafter-treatment.
