| Campuses are the carries of history and culture of colleges and universities, which reflect the spirit of colleges and universities in special background. With the development of the higher education, it will influence the progress of colleges and universities to remodel the space and outer surroundings in the traditional areas in them. Based on the research of space and outer surroundings in campuses and the investigation of some typical Colleges and Universities in China, and by dint of related theory of environmentology, ecology, architectural theory and urban design, this thesis focuses on the furthermore analysis of space and outer surroundings and looks for some ways and means of remodeling space and outer surroundings in traditional areas in colleges and universities in China. This thesis consists seven chapters. In the first chapter, introducing the research background, content and main concepts. Chapter two, reviewing the evolvement of universities, and mainly researching the trend of the development of colleges and universities in China in a macroscopically vision. Chapter three, analyzing the mainly problems in the macroscopically level in development of city and reformation on higher education, which are confronted by colleges and universities. Chapter four, assaying the elements of space and outer surroundings in traditional area in colleges and universities. Chapter five, protecting the space and outer surroundings in traditional area in colleges and universities. It is necessary to remodel the space and outer surroundings of campuses that we should protect the valuable parts in the space and outer surroundings of campuses after analyzing them in order to avoid the lost of characters of campuses.
