The fluid pressure pulsation in water piping system reduces marine hiding ability significantly, even leads to deterioration in operation security of the piping system. In this paper, the transfer matrix of Helmholtz resonator was erected, the resonant frequency and the characteristics of attenuating pressure pulsation were calculated by use of the transfer matrix method. In this paper, five schemes of variably tuned Helmholtz resonator were proposed and simulated detailedly, the results shows that changing the neck area affects the resonant frequency significantly. The scheme of changeable neck area was then selected and a prototype silencer was fabricated for experimental study. The results demonstrated that the variably tuned Helmholtz resonator can attenuate pressure pulsation of pump effectively. The experimental results agreed reasonably well with the simulated results and showed that the scheme of variably tuned Helmholtz resonator was feasible, the simulation arithmetic is suitable and the simulated results are believable too.
