With the development of national economy, constructive markets are flourishing. Because of the lack of steel, many companies built steel-making plants with converter. Simplified plane model and experiences of designer or tectonic measures are taken into account in earthquake resistance and design of these structures for the limit of technology and design period, which causes blindness and theoretic shortage of the design of these structures. In fact, a 3_D model should be used to analyze the seismic responses of these complex structures. Many plants are located in the area of earthquake, but there are not the records of the responses of the structures to earthquake. Although a lot of these plants are safe now, it cannot be ensured that there is not hidden trouble. In general, a steel-making plant with converter is made up of slag line, adding material line, converter line, molten steel line, casting line and producing line. The main equipments are placed in the tower located in the middle of the converter line. The tower is about 50 meters high, surrounded by monolayer workshops with different heights, in which there is monolayer crane and double deck crane or third deck crane. Because of the requirements of steel-making technology, the tower cannot be separated from the workshops completely, so the plant belongs to the kind of buildings in which the distribution of mass and stiffness is very asymmetric. Code for Seismic Design of Building (GB50011-2001) suggests more strict requirements for seismic design. It should be avoided to use irregular buildings. So there is not practical criterion about the seismic design of irregular buildings such as the steel-making plant with converter. Although steel has better capabilities of intensity than concrete, it is necessary that the 3-D analysis of earthquake resistance should be put in practice for the safety of the steel-making plant with converter. According to that mentioned above, in this dissertation a steel-making plant with converter is investigated. By using the software ANSYS, the 3_D model of the steel-making plant with converter is developed. The responses of the structure without seismic loads and with seismic loads are analyzed by using the 3_D model, so the safety and performance of the steel-making plant with converter to seismic loads are understood. By using the results being from 3_D model, feasibility of using plane model can be verified and the simplified method of designing irregular buildings can be explored.
