The wind effects on the construction, such as super high-rise buildings, the long span spatial structures and light weight buildings, are largely strengthened. So wind load is the one of principal loads in the controlled design to these buildings. How to calculate wind effect on the buildings is one of the hot issues in the both the theory and engineering domains. The question of wind effects on the buildings belongs to the flow around bluff body. The flow-field around the buildings is highly complicated, which is filled with series of complicated movements, such as separation, circulation, vortices etc. It is difficult to solve the complicated flow problem in theory. On the other hand, there are also many shortcomings for test methods, such as long period, hard work, expensive cost and weak adaptability. With the sustained development of turbulence model, as well as the surprising advancement of software, hardware and computation methods, the numerical simulation technique to the wind tunnel tests has gradually become mature, and it will have been the strongest means in the wind engineering. So in this paper the flow-field of the buildings is studied by this method in order to find wind effects on the buildings. The principal theories and calculation methods on the computational wind engineering are summarized at first. And the discrete controlled equation in three-dimensional steady state flow is deduced by the second upwind discrete scheme. The more details of researches are discussed such as flow area computation, grid, boundary condition, turbulence model, referred pressure, and calculation parameters with regard to numerical simulation. So the helpful advice on numerical simulation of the flow-field around the buildings is brought forward. The flow-field of a gymnasium with the consideration of aerodynamic interfere effects of the surrounding buildings is numerically simulated by FLUENT which is an analysis software of computational fluid dynamics. Comparisons between the mean wind pressure of the numerical simulation and the wind tunnel test of the building model are presented in detail. And r.m.s. pressure coefficients between the numerical simulation and the wind tunnel test are also compared. Finally the reasons leading to the differences between the results of the numerical simulation and the wind tunnel test are described. So the method of numerical simulation is reliable, and the calculation of wind load on the buildings by the means of numerical simulation is feasible.
