With the development of computers and the numerical technology, the numerical simulation method has acquired the wildespread approbation. Now the numerical simulation technology is regarded as a main means for the research of flow fields and has been becoming more and more popular for practical applications. This paper set up a numerical mode! to simulate the development of dam-break flows. In order to simulate the dam-break flows with high resolution, the govern equations of dam-break flows are discritized with FVM (Finite Volume Methods), and the numerical flux is treated with WENO schemes. At last the water surface profiles after dam-break and the depth and velocity distributions along the river flow and the arrival time of flood peak have been obtained. The details are as follows:(1) The numerical model of dam-break flows has been reviewed, in which the difficulty in dam-break flows simulation such as the choice of high resolution sechemes being required was pointed out.(2) The concepts merit and short comings of TVD ENO and WENO schemes are introduced and compared; the cores contents of ENO and WENO schemes-stencil reconstructions are intrduced detailly.(3) By treating the numerical flux in flows equations with WENO schemes and discretizing the time item with Runge-kutta method, numerical model of 1D and 2D dam-break with high resolution have been obtained.(4) A comparison was conducted between analytical results and numerical results of one-dimensional dam-break flows, which shows that the numerical solutions match the analytical solutions very well and no obvious numerical oscillation at discontinues. So it is clear that the numerical model based on WENO schemes can handle the discontinue problem very well. Futhermore the two-dimensional numerical solutions of dam-bareak flows are also obtained, and are compared with those by other methods, which shows that the numerical model based on WENO schemes can simulate the process of dam-break waves, and was a good numerical model.
