Steel tube confined concrete (STCC) columns have better structural performance than that of bare steel and reinforce concrete. The use of STCC column has been the interests of many structural engineers. How to reasonably evaluate the effect between the steel and the concrete in STCC stub column, beam column and beam is one of the hot topics in the relevant engineering field. The research on STCC column with square section under axial compression and the mechanical property of STCC beam-column and beam is seldom reported up to date. Behaviour and mechanism of STCC stub column, beam column and beam were investigated in this paper including theoretical and experimental studies. The present study is an attempt to study the static behaviour of STCC specimen. The resrarch work is summarized as follows: 1. The research on STCC home and abroad was reviewed. The limits on the current research are pointed out. The objectives of the present work and contents are described. 2. A series of tests on STCC stub column (twenty eight), beam column (twenty) and beam (four) were carried out. The main parameters varied in the tests are:(1) column section types, circular and square; (2) tube diameter (or width) to thickness ratio, from 40.5 to 162, (3) different bond and end loading conditions, both bonded and unbonded specimens were tested, including application of the axial load to the composite steel-concrete section and to the concrete only,(4) slenderness ratio (λ ), from 21.6 to 50and (5) load eccentricity ratio (e/r), from 0 to 0.5. 3. Load-deformation curves and work mechanism on STCC stub column, beam column and beam were obtained and analysed by ABAQUS. Good agreements are obtained compared with test results. 4. Based on the systemic analysis of parameters, the practical calculational methods for bearing capacity of STCC stub column, beam column and beam were developed. The predicted results are in good agreement with those of tests. The research work can supply design of practical engineering with the value reference.
