Experimental study on the tribological performance of material pairs andlubricating oil is the important reference of the choice of the materials and thelubricating oil of the worm gear drive. Aiming at the meshing performance of TIworm drive, study on the tribological performance of the materials and the lubricatingoil is performed, the main contents are as follows.According to the meshing characteristics of the TI worm drive, the requiredperformance of material pairs and the lubricating oil are discussed for the TI wormdrive.Under condition of the base oil lubricating, the experiments of the tribologicalperformance of several material pairs, including QSn6.5-0.1-20CrMnTi ,QSn6.5-0.1-35CrMo,45-20CrMnTi, 45-35CrMo, 40Cr-20CrMnTi,40Cr-35CrMo,20CrMnTi-20CrMnTi and 20CrMnTi-35CrMo, are performed on the wear-tester. Thetribological parameters, such as friction coefficient, attrition value, surface roughnessand surface topograghy, are compared respectively. The mechanism of friction andwear of material pairs is analysed. The results show that the antiwear and antifrictionperformance of the material pairs 40Cr-20CrMnTi is better than the performance ofothers and the material pairs 40Cr-20CrMnTi is feasible for the TI worm drive withharden teeth.To develop the new lubricant for the TI worm drive with harden teeth, the nanoparticles, such as Cu, Ni, ZnO ,Si3N4 and adamas, are used as additive dispersed in thebase oil for test on the wear-tester. And the tribological performance of the nanoparticles,is measured among the friction pairs of steel-steel and steel-copper. Theresults of investigation show that the antiwear and antifriction performance of base oilwith nano particles is more excellent than the single base oil . Moreover, the effect isinfluenced by such factors as the type of the nano particles, its thickness in the oil, theload carried and the materials of the friction pairs. The friction coefficient of thematerial pairs 40Cr-20CrMnTi is minimum under lubricating condition of base oilwith the Cu nano particles additive. At the same time, the wear extent of the pin 40Cris also minimum and the wearing surface of the pin 40Cr is smooth.Finally, the transmission experiment of the TI worm drive pairs is taken as aproving research. The mechanical efficiency of the TI worm drive reducer iscompared under condition of the base oil and the base oil with the Cu nano particlesas additive. The results of experiments present that the mechanical efficiency is higherwhen the transmission is lubricated by the oil with the Cu nano particles. Thedemonstration shows further that the antiwear and antifriction performance of thenano particles is superior to the base oil.
