With the rapid development of Chinese economy, the cities, as a result the citiesare undergoing fierce renovations. In view of some old "degenerating" downtownareas that are characterized by slow economic development, and a low living standard,although their current conditions are caused by some historical and realistic reasons,urban transformation and renovation has become an urgent and essential task.However, the problem is how to transform;besides, by what means we can rebuildour cities so as to better settle the conflicts arising from urban development.The status quo for the transformation of old downtown areas is typicallyrepresented by the style of large-scale housebreaking and house-building as well aspushing over for reconstruction. This paper is based on the exploration of side effectsexisting in current urban constructions. It discusses the importance and influence offolklore studies in city life in the aspect of folklore life. The author thus points out thatfolklore is the carrier of our history and culture, shapes the spirit of the city and thetemperament of the dwellers, bears the their emotions and memories, and correct andguide living behaviors in cities. The paper also demonstrates that the folklore liferepresents the features and charms of a city, consequently enough attention should bepaid to folklore during the process of transformation and renovation of old cities.The present paper introduces the theoretical framework of folklore studies inorder to seek for a new pathway for transformation and renovation of Chinese cities.The author also borrows some research findings in the field of folklore studies. It issincerely hoped that with the interdisciplinary and interactive research betweenfolklore and urbanology, more scientific, reasonable and organic approach may beprovided for healthful development of the cities. And at the same time, reference maybe made for the purpose of establishing a charming city full of local colors andfolklores. In the end, the paper combines some cases of transformation of old cityzones to put forward some renewing attempts in the aspect of folklore.It is wished that by writing this thesis, some contributions may be made towardsthe research and study in this field.
