High intensive discharge (HID) lamps become more and more popular in illumination applications for it's high lighting efficiency and other excellent performances. Compared with the traditional electromagnetic ballast, the electronic ballast has many advantages. Generally, an electronic ballast for the HID lamp operating with low frequency square waveform is adoptive since it can ensure the lamp free of acoustic resonance. Simplify its topology, improve its performance and reliability is the main tasks for engineers working in industries.First, some terms in lighting and categories of the lamps are introduced. The physical and electrical characters of the HID lamps are briefly discussed.In Chapter â…¡, categories of two stage low frequency square waveform ballasts are given. A novel control stretagy for a novel low frequency electronic ballast for the HID lamp is proposed ,then, a novel two stage low cost low frequency electronic ballast for HID lamp is proposed in this paper.In Chapter â…¢, analysis of a digital controlled three-stage low frequency square waveform ballast for HID lamps is presented. A detailed design flowchart, a novel and efficacious constantpower control strategy for the electronic ballast for HID lamp is proposed.In Chapter â…£, The characters of automotive headlamp and the requirements to its ballast are interpreted. Detailed design flowchart is presented too. All these works described above are verified by the experimental results.
