There are closed relationship among stress path, settlement and strength;and settlement estimating from stress path is one of the classical theories in soil mechanics. This thesis will study the relation among settlement, strength and stress paths by drainage consolidation method.Based on the formers' work, this paper's main work is shown as following, which is finished by field experiment, laboratory test and theoretical analysis.Firstly, knowledge about stress path theory is summarized in the paper, the relation between deformation and stress path are discussed, and some settlement estimating methods are compared with each other from the prospective of stress path theory.Secondly, based on field test, these stress path curves are drawn, which are correspond to vacuum preloading, surcharge preloading and vacuum combined with surcharge preloading. The three types of stress paths are analyzed and compared with each other, based on soil mechanics knowledge.Thirdly, vacuum preloading, surcharge preloading and vacuum combined with surcharge preloading are simulated through laboratory. The changes of settlement, strength and stress paths are studied under series affectation factors. Finally, combined with a project, the settlement of soft soil foundation is calculated with stress path method, the result is compared to the real settlement observed in the field;and the error is analyzed and the defect of stress path theory is discussed in the thesis.
