During construction, the tower of cable-stay bridge is very sensitive to the wind because there is no stay cable to support it. When the bridge tower is made of steel, its rigidity and damping are lower. So the tower is prone to strong vibration under the action of wind and it may influence the construction and the safety of the bridge tower seriously. For this reason, the control of the vortex-induced vibration of the tower of the Nanjing No.3 Bridge over the Yangtze river was studied in this paper ,based on Passive Tuned Mass Damper (TMD).In front of this paper, the most optimized parameter of TMD damping was studied when the damping of the main system main was considered. So we get the method of solving the most optimized parameter of TMD. Then the damping of the steel bridge towers , the TMD mass ratio control effect, the suitable damping and the fixing place of the TMD were discussed. Lastly, TMD model with the most optimized parameter was installed on the model of the bridge tower in the wind-tunnel and the test was carried on. From the result of the test, we find that TMD has well controled the vibration, theory and test results agreed with each other very well. It has presented an effective theory and experimental basis for the use of TMD in contral vibration of the steel bridge tower for the practical project.
