With the development of Automobile industry,the body design plays a more important part in whole vehicle design,using computer software to design the shape is necessary. At present the computer design softwares are divided into two kinds:art software and engineering software.Because these two kinds of softwares have difficulty in data communication and the current vehicle design softwares are too engineering-oriented,this paper brings forward a shape design method using 3dsmax,and explores a method to transform 3dsmax polygon model to UG nurbs model.This paper at first compares representation technique on vehicle concept design,and contrasts the popular softwares in market.Then introduces the principle and structure of 3dsmax polygon model in detail,its key is approach,using approximately polygon to simulate real object,the approach degree is determined by iteration number,and smooth surface technique predigest the model,but reduce the quality of surface.Then analyses how to convert vehicle photo to 3dsmax model,and gives a bus model as example;discusses the idea of using 3dsmax plug character studio human bone to design interior considering man-machine engineer.In second half of this paper,introduces the set up of nurbs curves and surface and how to examine the fairness of them,then compared the difference of Rhino and UG in nurbs modeling, UG uses parameter and associated data to build the engineering model.Then analyses how to transform 3dsmax polygon model to UG nurbs model,brings forward a manual method using 3dsmax and UG default importing and exporting port .The first method uses curve as medium,by drawing out the key curves from polygon model surface, converting these curves to nurbs curves and modify them in Rhino, using these curves building nurbs surfaces and combining the surfaces to finish the conversion;The second method uses point cloud as intermedium, by exporting points data from 3dsmax, using reverse engineering software to deal with the points and build the surface to finish the conversion.At last a flow chart shows using 3dsmax to design the vehicle body shape.The method of using 3dsmax and UG to design the shape exerts the advantage of art software and engineering software, increases the efficiency and presentation quality of vehicle body concept design, at the same time fulfil the demand of engineering application.
