Suction caissons as a technique was studied by scholars in 50'times and was first applied in platform of Norway northsea in 90'times. Itself has many merits such as low cost, few investment, conveniently in building and construction work; easy in callback, can be utilized many times. Especially as anchor system in deep platform, for example, anchor system of tension leg platform, it has evidently superiorities in security and economy. Suction caissons as anchor system advanced expoiture of deepsea . So far the work depth of tension leg platform exceeds 1,500m. So, suction caissons begin to substitute traditional pipe. Two key problems of suction caissons's design are confirming its vertical pullout behaviour and reasonly choice its dimension. In this paper suction caissons's concept and action mechanism is first introduced and the trending of suction caissons's study and development is also summarized in world.Afterwards, vertical pullout behaviour considering both the wave and the current's loads is computed and analysed on suction caissons. Then three computing methods is introcuded to analysis the vertical pullout behaviour, which are force analysis, Taut catenary method and non-linear FEM.Besides, theory correlation to soil mechanics is introduced and suction caissons's vertical pullout behaviour is discussed.Lastly, tension leg platform named Mars in Mexico is counted in vertical pullout behaviour in three methods and the results are also compared and analysed in these methods. In this basic how the parameters of soil mechanics effecting the ability of vertical pullout of suction caissons is analysed.
