Base on the summarization of the existing technique of controllable reactor, the principle of adjustable reactor based on magnetic flux controlling is analyzed and deepened. From this, a novel approach to get a larger capacity adjustable reactor is proposed. First, the port models of two windings and multiple windings transformers with no magnetic saturation are built. With this, the detailed analysis is offered to the port impedance characteristic of the transformers when their windings current presents different relationships. Generic principle of transformer magnetic flux controlling is studied by controlling the windings current relationships to control transformer magnetic flux to control the transformers port impedance. It is a good reference for our current research on adjustable reactor. Second, analysis on the control system character and control strategy is given for the advantages and disadvantages of the multiple windings topology larger capacity adjustable reactor method we are studied now. To improve it in this two aspects, a hybrid control approach and a phase-shifted SPWM current control method are proposed. Phase-shifted SPWM current control method combined with multiple windings topology is so suit for multiple windings magnetic flux controlling adjustable reactor that it can not only simplify the control system, but also bring up the equivalent switching frequency so that large capacity power semiconductor devices with lower switching frequency can be used here. In this way, the larger capacity adjustable reactor can be obtained. Last, the experimentation on the prototype proves that the multiple windings magnetic flux controlling adjustable reactor is more excellence than ever. The simulations on the phase-shifted SPWM current control method make it possible to be realization.
