The use of ground penetrating radar (GPR) has become widespread in highway tunnel inspection with the development of highway engineering. As an efficient and advanced non-destructive detection approach, GPR can scan the lining of tunnels successively, thus obtaining objective and accurate plots. However, the application of this radar has just commenced in China, accompanied with many problems, such as the inspection precision of the radars and the judging principles of the probing plots, which affects the reliability of the results probed by this kind of radars. This paper focuses on the applications of GPR in quality inspection of tunnel lining. A software named TunGPR toward Sweden RAMAC ground penetrating radars for quality inspection of lining is developed on the basis of Visual Basic. The database derived by using this program results in an increased efficiency in quality inspection of tunnels lining. A general procedure for quality inspection of GPR in tunnel lining is suggested based on the designed model specimens and 800MHz shield antennas, some groups of preliminary test datas are obtained for solving problems caused during quality inspection of lining. The thickness, the reinforce steel bar and many kinds of default are preliminarily described through studies on radar datas. In addition, combining with the project of detection in Nanjing, general process and principle of GPR detecting in tunnel lining of high way tunnel are brought forward. After analyzing the data coming from practical tunnel projects meticulously and comparing with other inspecting approach, the TunGPR for ground penetrating radar and the model test results are proved to be practical and accurate.
