As along the development of modern production and the progress of scientific technology, the consumption need for power has increased steadily, and with higher requirements on the reliability and stability of the power equipment. Due to the mass generation of power, the function of power equipment has been improved better and better, and the automatic level is up-and-up. For securing the safe, economical and stable operation of power system, the fault monitoring and maintenance of power equipment are more and more important.This article has systematically analyzed the configuration function in hardware and software, as well as their performance, which are based on the complete understanding of the monitoring and diagnosing objects in power system, and combining the actual application conditions in WISCO of computer general protection (CGR), also with real failure cases, it has proved the utility value of computer general protection.1, Based on the monitoring and failure diagnosing objects, (such as the equipment of power plant, substation and power system: transformer, HV generator, power supply lines and bus bar, etc.), it gives the explanation on the failure representation and reasons of their common failures, and with brief analysis on their equipped protection measures. So that to provide the heavy support means of failure diagnosing and protection of power system equipment.2, Through the actual case of computer general protection (CGR) in substation of WISCO 6# BF, it has analyzed the configuration function and effect in hardware and software, and used the economical and profit analysis to prove the CGR utility value.3, As the development of optical fibre communication, it has solved the technical problems as differential protection in remote line, etc. if the optical fibre communication and CGR are combined as protection system, and put into the differential protection in mid/short lines, it will greatly improve the operation performance of power network, and solve the problem of adaptation and transition between the new system and old system. Therefore, it has good application prospect.
