Given the structural design of highway bridges from the long-standing practice of "constant design method" to "probabilistic ultimate state design method" is imperative and urgent change, so the paper will focus on structural reliability theory which is applied in the design of highway bridges. Firstly, the paper will research the Monte-Carlo method of the structural reliability of highway bridges (the MC simulation of the structural reliability of concrete) and practical analysis methods. Against the weaknesses of the first-order second-moment method which has been used widely in civil engineering and according to the geometric significance of the structural reliability index, the paper will establish the optimum model of the structural reliability index on the basis of JC method, present a new method of calculating and demonstrate its feasibility and superiority by practical examples in bridge engineering. Secondly, the paper will establish the theoretical probability models of structural resistances and loads of highway bridges to analyze their dispersive laws and relevant statistical parameters, and gain the statistical information of structural resistances and loads that the structural reliability design and analysis of highway bridges need. Finally, the paper will research probabilistic ultimate state design method of highway bridge structures, determine partial factors, the important factor of highway bridge structures, the effect combination of highway bridge loads and the section design of structural members, and introduce the optimum design methods of highway bridge structures. The paper will demonstrate the design method of highway bridge structures on the basis of structural reliability from two aspects of theory and practice by the analysis of practical examples.
