There are three stages which the thoughts & styles of the Chinese architecture had been changed. The first stage is the west architecture imitating, the second is the revival of Chinese traditional architecture, the last is the development of modernistic architecture. These interlaced stages which not only went on step by step but overlapped each other made up of the evolutive course of the architectural styles in Chinese modern times architectual history. This thesis analysises the returned students' effects of the evolvement of Chinese architectual thoughts & styles in modern times. In the early 1900's, some returned students who affected by architectual thoughs of academism began to imitate the west classical architecture. They focused on artistic sculpt and paid attention to architectual models & styles while ignored functions & costs of architecture. This practice ofdesign foreshadowed the revival of Chinese traditional architecture in learned aspects. Subsequently, affected by the thoughts of nationalism & China first, returned students who broke away from the category of imitating west architecture began to concern Chinese traditional architecture. They either combined the elements of Chinese traditional architecture with West architecture, or researched into Chinese traditional architecture via west architectual methods. The returned students were the most significant factor of Chinese traditional architecture's revival. In 1930's, modernistic architectual ideas were introduced into China by the returned students who advocated casting off the restrict of traditional architectual forms. They sparkpluged new architechtual esthetics & styles. There exist functionalism & rationalism in their thoughts. From following architectual thoughs of academism to groping for Chinese traditional architecture then to pushing modernistic architecture, the returned students had influenced the thoughts & styles of Chinese latter-day architecture directly. Their ideas & actions in design had provided experience to architects in aftertime.
