When the stability of expansive soil slope is analyzed by numerical modeling, parameters that the model needs are difficult to measure. Besides, how weak structural surface influences on the expansive soil strength is not clear. This research paper was designed to study expansive soil and shale from Nanyou Road to provide parameters for simulating calculation method.Sliding faces were all formed on the soil-rock interfaces, when expansive soil slope failure of Nanyou Road occurred. In this research, anisotropy of wicking ability in expansive shale of original state was studied though simulating the working condition. Result shows that, because of the microstructure created by sedimentation occurred during the geologic time, water soaking in the direction of stratification is much rapid followed by forming crannies, while in the perpendicular direction, water soaking is more slowly, and no visible cranny is observed. How weak structural surface influences on the expansive soil strength was investigate by Triaxial Test system manufactured by WFI. Test result shows that large deformation occurs under low stress during Triaxial Test of expansive soil sample with weak structural surface. Further more, the view that, this characteristic is the crucial reason leading to the appearance of crannies on the top of the slope before the slope fails, is proposed.Considering that slope failures mostly took place during the rainy season, which was also the period that the temperature changed sharply, the effect of temperature on the strength of expansive soil was studied by Triaxial Test. The result shows that the strength of expansive soil increases linearly with temperature.Another significant fruit is to deduce a formula to express Poisson Ratio and Resilience modulus by k0 and more important is that u and E was measured relatively accurately and conveniently with the help of GDS Trixail Test System. This test provides convincible parameters for simulating calculation method.
