Compared with traditional materials, composites have many advantages, such as high strength-to-weight and high stiffness-to-weight, which make composites being widely used in the field of aeronautics, astronautics, national defense and civil engineering. It is very important to build up strength models for the security of the structures. Based on both macro- and micro- stress fields, composite structures'damage and failure are analyzed in this paper.Micro-stress fields calculated by the GMC model are validated by micro-mechanics FEM.The paper analyzes the failure modes of a composite structure with a centric hole by using the failure criterion based on macro-stress and the failure criterion based on the micro-stress of RVE calculated by GMC. The results show the failure analysis base on GMC is feasible. The paper introduces the analysis method of residual stress of composite structures. Combining the residual stress with GMC model, residual stress's influences to the composites'strength are analyzed.Based on ANSYS parameter design language, this paper develops the program of composite structures'progressive failure. Failure criterion based on macro-stress fields (Maximum stress criteria and Hashin criteria) and micro-stress fields (analysis methods based on Huang model and GMC model) are added to the program, results of different criterion are compared.
