Poyang Lake connects five rivers (Gan River, Fu River, Xiu River, Rao River, Xin River) in Jiangxi province, and is also maintained in a high water level by Yangtze River. Flood disaster is very frequent in Poyang Lake region. It threats people's lives and properties, and blocks the economic development there. In this paper, taking Poyang Lake region as a case studing, basing on GIS, selecting the precipitation, the five rivers, terrain of the Lake, hydraulic engineerings in Lake and flood of Yangtze River as impact factors, flood hazard and flood risk in Poyang Lake are studied synthetically. It will provide scientific base for the non-project measures consummating, flood rescuing, also provide practical guidance for the development of flood avoiding argiclture to reduce the economic loss. Conclusions are the following:(1) The importance of studying flood disaster is given, current situation of study on flood disaster and achievements including shortage in Poyang Lake region are introduced simply, the significance of flood risk studying by use of GIS technology is highlighted.(2) After analyzing in detail on physical geography, social situation, flood disaster in history and its cause, the impact of precipitation, the five rivers, the terrain of the Lake, hydraulic engineerings and flood of Yangtze River on flood hazard and flood risk are evaluated. Using Analytic Hierarchy Process, basing on historical flood data and expertise evaluations, the weights of each factor impacting flood hazard and flood risk are given.(3) Using spatial analysis of GIS, the effects of each factor to flood disaster are quantified, map of flood hazard distribution and map of flood disaster vulnerability distribution are achieved respectively. The first map mainly reflects natural attribution of the flood disaster, but the second one mainly reflects the social attribution. Map of flood risk is given by overlaying the two maps with the help of GIS.Result shows us the following key points:The flood hazard is higher in the places beside the five rivers and the Poyang Lake than the other places; project and non-project measures should be taken to alleviate flood disaster in these places. As for the levees that can not satisfy current...
