The investigation on the problem of aeroelasticity for the long span bridge has been the most important and popular field in the science of the bridge. In the past wind tunnel investigations were the main way to study the aeroelastic problem. With the immense leap in computational speeds in the recent past, numerical experiments via Computational Fluid Dynamics are fast maturing as a viable complement. The investigation on the aeroelasticity theory is the base of the numerical experiment. So it becomes more and more important. This paper attempt to study the problems of the aeroelasticity of the flat steel box girder for long-span suspension bridge via variational principles and use it to the actual structure. The main contents of this paper are as follows:1. The generalized Lagrange equation has been deduced from the Hamilton theory. It is used to get out the movement equation of flutter which is coupling between bend and torsion. Together with the flutter derivatives tabled by Scanlan, the detail expression of flutter equation has been taken out.2. The first kind quasi-complementary energy principle with two kinds of variables in elasto-statics is used to get out the shearing force flow of the box girder for suspension which is under the free torsion. The destroying circumstances are received.3. The variational integral method is introduced to establish the...
