The research and development of energy saving process equipments is an important method to save energy nowadays. The heat exchanger is a kind of universal technologic equipment, which is widely used in many industries, such as chemical industry, oil refining, power generation, food industry, light industry, atomic energy installation, medicine manufacturing industry, aerospace industry and so on. Shell-and-tube heat exchanger has many advantages such as reliable structure, mature technique and wide applicability, so it is the mostly used structure in the internal and overseas applications of heat exchangers. The shell-and-tube heat exchanger gets continuous improvement and development with the great progress of the heat transfer enhancement technique and modern design and research method.The method which integrates theoretical analysis, numerical simulation and experiment is adopted to research the heat transfer enhancement technique for the shell-side of the shell-and-tube heat exchanger in the paper. The following main achievements and innovations are obtained.1. Structure characteristics of the shell-side of the shell-and-tube heat exchanger and laws of fluid flow and heat transfer are researched deeply, and "sideling flow" in the shell-side is researched especially. Which is relative to the flow states of the cross-flow, the longitudinal-flow and the helical-flow, this flow state makes the shell-and-tube heat exchanger have the integrative advantages of both the cross-flow heat exchanger and the longitudinal-flow heat exchanger, so it develops the structural design concept of the shell-side of the shell-and-tube heat exchanger.2. The new style energy saving shell-and-tube heat exchanger—shutter baffle heat exchanger is researched to improve and develop the structure of the shell-side. The effect of the structure and processing parameters on heat transfer and flow-resistance performance of the shutter baffle heat exchanger is also investigated, both the correlative equations of the heat transfer coefficient and the pressure drop in the shell-side are deduced. The kind of heat exchanger realizes sideling flow in the shell-side, improves the flow state in the shell-side, and has the ability of the heat transfer enhancement, which provides the well aided method for improving the shell-and-tube heat exchanger.3.
