The structure characteristic of rock mass is an important factor for the tunnel stability. And description of structure characteristics has become one absolutely necessary tool and base for evaluation of the tunnel stability. Depending on the Zoumaling tunnel project, this paper does the following studies about the characteristic of rock mass and the stability and support behaviors of the surrounding rock of tunnel:â‘ According to the rock characters,geological structure and the region geological condition, discuss the history that the rock mass how to formed and reformed.â‘¡By means of field research of rock mass and indoor statistic analysis, structural planes are classified with engineering geology method. And structural planes'engineering geology characters are also quantitatively or semi-quantitatively described and analyzed to construct the conceptualization model about rock mass structural. The reason how the tectonic joints formed is analyzed.â‘¢Depending on the field investigation and the massive testing data, combining the actual situation of tunnel construction, use the highway tunnel surrounding rock classification method, the hydraulic and water-electricity surrounding rock classification method and the RMR surrounding rock classification method. Finally carry on the information decision-making and the dynamic adjustment to the surrounding rock, providing the basis for proper support and the structure optimization.â‘£It is presented that the specialties of FEM (Finite Element Method) used to simulate the excavation in underground engineering. By means of three dimensional FEM geological mechanical model is founded. The distance that the fault fracture zone affected is also analyzed. Three-dimensional finite element method is used to analyze systematically the distribution of stress filed,strain field and plastic zone in the surrounding rock mass of the underground cavities after excavation.Study on the characters of rock mass condition and the stability of surrounding rock has great practical significance to optimize design parameter and to advance construction quality.
