Reinforced concrete member is one of the most common members in civil engineering, the bearing capacity and stability of it have been regarded by numerous researchers and engineers. With the development of modern engineering technology, high-strength rebar and concrete are being used universally, the cross section size of reinforced member is more and more small, and the slenderness ratio is more and more great. This trend extrude the carrying capacity and stability of reinforced concrete member obviously.Chongqing grand theater is a large social and cultural public project which integrates the performance of opera,drama,concert,and the communication of cultural and artistic,it is one of the top ten famous buildings. On the structural design of Chongqing grand theater, German architect request adopt not only shear wall around the building, but also frame columns whose cross section is gracile(b×h=400mm×1000mm). Due to the high floor height( H = 8m) of Chongqing grand theater, it leads to slender column ,the slenderness of which is great. Based on the item 7.3.11 of《Code for design of concrete structures》(GB50010-2002), when calculate the bearing capacity of cross section assume the calculational length l0 are 1 .0Hand 1 .25H, the slenderness ratios of the column of floor1 and floor2 are 20 and 25, and the axial compression ratio is large(about 0.9). The correlative item of《Code for design of concrete structures》(GB50010-2002)points out that when the slenderness ratio of the member is greater than 30 the method ofη-l0may lead great error, should adopt model column method. Based on the analytical result, the axial force is large and the moment is negligible, whether the failure mode of these columns is unstable failure- If unstable failure happens, the bearing capacity of these columns may be less than that of material failure, the safety of this project may not be guaranteed. For this matter, the owner of this project hope validate the safety of this project by structural experiment, confirm the failure mode of these columns, and degree of the effect to the bearing capacity of longitudinal rebar, provide reference for the design of these slender columns. Guarantee the safety of this project.This experiment focus on the failure mode and the ultimate bearing capacity of these columns. Besides, this experiment also study the rule of the development of the deflection, the crack, the strain and the stress with the process of this experiment..
