Multi-step pushover method (MSP) is a new earthquake damage evaluation method according with current code, which is proved to be a method with high efficiency, simplicity and good accuracy. It has been widely used in civil engineering seismic damage forecasting .In MSP method, The stiffness model (MSK) of the civil engineering building is affected by several factors which have not yet been completely realized. In this paper, the selection and improvement of the stiffness model MSK of MSP method are specially studied and discussed. The result of nonlinear time-stepping method acts as an accurate outcome. In different locations, the different structural systems are studied with MSP method. The author finds that the change of structural stiffness is closely related with that of secant stiffness in the course of structural distortion.Primary period of SDOF (T0), the first period of MDOF (T1), the second period of MDOF (T2) and character period of structural location (Tg) are the main factors affecting MSK. Then the simple stiffness model MSK is designed. The error between MSP method and nonlinear time-stepping method is suitable to the demand of the civil engineering building seismic damage forecasting.
