The problem of the structures'health and safety is always one of the focuses of modern research over the world. Due to PVDF's prominent qualities of high sensitivity, low price, thinness, wide frequency response band, light weight, non-corrosion, good stability and flexility and so on, it has been more and more popular in the field of structural health monitoring. In this paper, much work has been done to study the properties of PVDF film, which includes sensing mechanism, encapsulation technique, dynamic sensing properties, the application in the experiment of tubular joint and the health monitoring of offshore platform.Firstly, the experimental system has been founded, including the hardware and software of signal collecting. The paper has brought forward the means to confirm PVDF's sensitivity, has made analysis on the amplitude verssus frequency response characteristic and has studied properties such as repetition and lag phenomena.Secondly, much research work has been done to study the encapsulation technique of PVDF in order to keep it having good sensing stability sufficiently, including the structure's organization and the material's choice. The paper has given a particular description about PVDF's affixing in the application of structures'health monitoring.Thirdly, in the impact loadingexpriment, PVDF's properties have been studied by compearing with the strain gauges, including the corresponding peak values of the two sensors and lag phenomena.Lastly, experiments have been done on tubular joint of offshore platform based on the PVDF strain sensor and the optical fiber bragg grating (OFBG). Especially the two kinds of sensors have been compared in the same condition. Analysis has been done briefly about the sensing results of PVDF which acts as the local sensor in the health monitoring system of CB32A platform. The paper has deeply realized basic sensing properties of PVDF, and the work is so fundamental for their application in engineering and further exploiture.
