Currently, a great number of the freight cars in our country adopt the wheel that has two bores in the web. Rail wheels are the important part of the railway cars. A lot of heat experienced during the process of braking are due to the friction, the rail wheel also experiences many thermal stresses, especially the region near the bore inside of the web, a stress concentration will happen. When the increasing of the speed and loading of the freight train, the heat load of the wheel will certainly increase, the life of the rail wheel may be influenced terribly.Based on the fluxional equation of thermal conduction and the basic principle of finite element method, this work obtained the condition of emergent brake according to the axle weight, the space and the braking distance. Then by using the ANSYS software, the distribution of the temperature and thermal stress under the service brake, emergency brake and ramp brake condition were simulated and analyzed, and simulate the distribution of mechanical stress upon the wheel. The thermal stress and mechanical stress are applied as the stress environment for the crack submodel calculation near the bore inside of the web plate. Also the work includes the analysis of the stress strength factor and crack propagation characteristics of the no-wore and wore 20mm wheel under various brake condition.
