The properties of rock mass are influenced by joints which exist in that rock mass greatly. However ,the parameters of those joints can't be described exactly. In general degree, such parameters will be thought as random variables or stochastic functions of these primitive random variables. The aim of this paper is to provide a new method in order to estimate how the existing joints impress uncertainty on the mechanical properties of rock mass. The main idea is just as follows:1,The analysis of rock stochastic mechanics. Based on the hypothesis that the displacement of microelement can be composed of two parts , a single rock's displacement itself and joints'which adjacent to the rock., just as the stress of microelement, material operators of that microelement can be established. Furthermore material operator of meso-domain can be acquired by material operator of those microelement and the distribution function of the latter operator. Finally it lead to material operator of such macro-element (rock mass) .2,The analysis of the relations of distortion process and stress process when time-factors will be considered. Based on the hypothesis that distortion process stress process of jointed rock mass can be thought as stochastic process, just as stress process, the key control equation of such relations can introduced.3,The discussion of material operator of meso-domain under the situation of elastic, elastic-plastic and rheologic on the basis of rock stochastic mechanics.4,A simple example that a hole excavated in elastic jointed rock mass will be introduced to illustrate how random variables influence the properties of jointed rock mass.
