Portal frame light steel structure building has many advantages, such as low self-weight, good property of seismic resistance, convenient and easy construction. Now it's one of the most popular steel structures used in China. 《Technical specification for steel structure of light-weight buildings with gabled frames》 (CECS 102:98) , greatly promote the development of portal frame light steel structure buildings. However, many these buildings were built before the technical specification, so it's necessary to evaluate their earthquake-resistance performance.Based on the characteristics of portal frame light steel structure, the responses of this building under earthquake are analyzed. After summarizing the deficiencies of traditional seismic theories, the performance-based theory is proposed in this paper. On the basis of current national codes of China and America, the new seismic evaluation method for the portal frame light steel structure is established.
