An innovative tuned mass dampers based on translation passive tuned mass dampers (PTMD), rotational PTMD, is proposed in this dissertation. The construction of model, theoretic modeling of the translation PTMD and rotational PTMD, numerical computation are studied. Additionally, dynamic simulation is carried out through the SIMULINK toolbox in MATLAB to get dynamic response of controlled structure with the two PTMD. The effects of translation PTMD and rotational PTMD varying parameters on earthquake responses of the high-rise structures are also discussed. The main contents of this dissertation are listed as follows:1 The rotational PTMD and construction of model has been put forward. D'alembert's principle and virtual work principle has been used to develop the vibration equations of the shear structures, curved scissors structures, flexure structures with translation PTMD and rotational PTMD.2 The vibration equations are inverted to the form of state space. And the code is programmed in MATLAB; dynamic simulation is carried out through the SIMULINK toolbox. The formation of damping matrix has also been discussed in this dissertation.3 Base on two engineering structures, a 10-story concrete building and luoyang tower, the effects of the two PTMD varying parameters, such as damping ratio, mass ratio, frequency ratio, frequency of PTMD, on earthquake responses are discussed. The evaluation criterion for benchmark problem is given and numerical results show that rotational PTMD can control the earthquake responses efficiently. The practicability and effectiveness of the rotational PTMD are approved through systematical theoretic modeling and numerical computation, which lays out foundation for developing the effects of rotational PTMD on wind response and nonlinear structure on earthquake response.
