Water Plant of Jinshan Petrochemical Co. Ltd in Shanghai is responsible for the water demand of Jinshan County. The water source of the plant is from Zishijing and Zhangjing River. The water environment of the basin is contaminated to different degrees, causing a higher level of difficulties for processing the water, especially in low temperature periods. To meet the requirements of the new standard promulgated in 2001, to overcome the technical difficulty in water processing in low temperature and to make sure the safety of Jinshan people on drinking water, an experimental research in using polyaluminum ferric chloride has been carried out.The article comprehensively discusses the achievement on coagulant research and gives an introduction of PAFC on the property and application. A comparison is made in the coagulation effects between polyaluminum chloride and polyaluminum ferric chloride with the results as follows. In the key indexes of turbidity, pH value and dosage, the purifying effect of polyaluminum ferric chloride is much better than that of polyaluminum chloride. The comprehensive performance of polyaluminum ferric chloride is better than that polyaluminum chloride during low temperature period, besides PAFC is more economical. The research also shows that whichever purifying technique is used, NH4+-N is almost impossible to be eliminated from water and the elimination of COD is without regulation. The article discusses the influencing factors during coagulation and points out the relationship between dosage and the turbidity of effluent water. The completion of the research will provide technical support for the processing of water during low temperature. It will result in important social profit for ensuring the drinking water safety and health of people in Jinshan County.
