The shunt reactors are installed on the UHV(EHV) transmission lines which are used to compensate the capacitive power and restrain the power frequency over-voltage. The paper analyzes the shunt reactor's function with the different compensation ratios and installment positions. And against to the new problems of relay protection which are brought by the capacitive current and the shun reactor, this paper analyzes the conditions of traditional current differential protection with capacitance current compensation and corrects the criterion. And a new traveling wave differential protection based on Mathematical Morphology is proposed. The schemes are proved to be correct and effective by the theoretical analysis and simulations.
