Prototype Strategy

After 2002, the Shanghai Qingpu has experienced a large-scale construction of the city. With the participation of a large number of famous Chinese and foreign architects and the positive promotion by government, Qingpu, a small traditional town in south of China, has become the forefront of contemporary architectural practice of China. It gives us a good opportunity to ruminate on contemporary architecture of China.In this dissertation, we concentrate on the significance of architectural practice in Qingpu based on the design level of architecture. Firstly, it summarizes the background about Qingpu and China's 20-year development of modern architecture. Secondly, five contemporary construction examples of Qingpu are selected and diagrammatized. Then, in order to achieve profound thought about indigenous essence of contemporary architecture in China, prototypes are used to illustrate, summarize and expand all of the analyses. Finally, the dissertation summarizes significance and revelation of practice in Qingpu. What we should look for is existed in daily life and our tradition. Future architecture's characteristics of China will come from the deeply understanding of Chinese actuality. At the end of the dissertation, most diagrams used are provided in addendum which will become the foundation for further research by other scholars.Since pictures have less difference with practical buildings, we use diagrams to study the constructions in Qingpu. In order to understand the development of contemporary architectural design of China, I believe that it is just the beginning to diagrammatize Qingpu.
