When the HVDC system operates under the monopolar mode, the great current may cause some bad influence on the nearby environment. With the HVDC or UHVDC rapid development, how to optimize the electrode design and reduce the environmental influence need to be well studied. The first work in this paper is presenting an optimization thought for the electrode design based on the analysis of the effects on the running parameters caused by electrode shape and burial depth with the image method. Then, it analyzes the reason of the influence. Aiming at the transformer DC magnetic bias, some evaluation methods and prevention and cure measures are presented. Finally the influence evaluation range has been put forward according to the analysis of the DC projects that have been operated. Within this range, combining the Dongyang electrode site selected for±800kV DC project Xiluodu right bank converter station, the electrode design and its influences are analyzed. The optimization thought has been validated and some other practical conclusions also have been reached.
