The coped beams have been more commonly utilized in Medium-rise and high-rise frame structures. However, the behavior of coped beam is not well understood and the related design rules are not available in Chinese Code. Because of the geometry, Material Nonlinear, initial geometric imperfections, and coped parameters, it is difficult to predict the buckling resistance of coped beams. Based on the latest experimental study abroad, lateral-torsional buckling resistance of coped beams has been analyzed in this paper. In this paper the finite element program ANSYS9.0 is applied to carry out the finite element nonlinear analysis of coed beams. The FEM models were then verified by the experimental results in terms of lateral-torsional buckling resistance. The verified FEM model was used as a baseline for an extensive parametric study of coped beam considered the geometry, material nonlinearity, initial geometric imperfections. The result shows that the coped length, coped depth, and span length have a significant influence on the lateral-torsional buckling resistance of coped beam. In contrast, the yield strength, initial geometric imperfections have little effect on that.Based on the finite element nonlinear analysis, this paper modify the overall stability list φ_b in GB50017-2003, use the overall stability list φ_c for coped beam instead of φ_b, then the practical calculate formula for lateral-torsional buckling resistance of coped beam be advanced on the safe side. The result computed from advised formula be coincident with the result of experimental and FEM.
