In order to avoid or reduce the loss caused by damages and failures owing to various cause during the bridge's service period, it is necessary to effectively monitor the bridges. Therefore more attention is being drawn to the health monitoring of bridge gradually.In this paper, the bridge health monitoring system is introduced, including its basic concept; and then the problems about the health monitoring system are presented. The optimal sensor placement in the bridge health monitoring system is taken as the important part in this text. Through generalizing the existing sensor optimum criterions, optimum methods and damage identification methods, the properties of structures monitoring and the damage of structural monitoring are selected as optimum object to study the sensors placement optimization. The specific works are list as:In the researches of sensors optimal placement by the aim of properties of structures monitoring, a large number of work is concentrated on cable-stayed bridge and suspension bridge, the researches about arch bridge are less. In this article, a steel arch bridge in shenyang is used, the applications of sensors optimal placement on steel arch bridge are studied. Different target functions are designed for different properties of structures. Through comparing serial methods and genetic algorithms for one target function, the conclusion that the genetic algorithms is more suitable for sensors optimal placement in bridge health monitoring system. The numerical model of the deck and arch rib of the bridge is found, the sensors optimal placement in this two important constructions is completed using genetic algorithms.The sensors optimal placement method based on the damage of structural monitoring has many different with the method based on the properties of structures monitoring, its aim is damage identification of structures. More damage information of structures can obtained by means of sensors optimal placement. In this paper, a truss bridge is chose as an example. Using the sensitivity matrix of modal shapes analysis, the sensors optimal placement program is deduced including the most damage information. And then, a two-step method of damage identification is presented: firstly, determination the position of damage cell using MDLAC rule; secondly, a structural damage control equation is found to identify the damage quantification.
