The concrete faced rock-fill dams are increasingly taking into accout by the hydraulic engineering field .due to its some advantages such as: small section, good security, convenience of construction and the low cost of construction etc. meanwhile, It is differ in the rock component, the exploded result and the roller compaction intensity to the different .construction materials in different areas, which make the material design of CFRD copy the engineer experiences and lack of theory research .The most main character of local material dams is how to take advantage of the various rocks of the dam field including various digged material to cut down the cost and speed up the progress. So it will be a technology development to study utilization of local materials in the future.This paper mainly study the materials of CFRD of Da Shui Gou in Yunnan province, and explore the application feasibility of small size spall in the CFRD. It shows that the all physical mechanical index of small size spall satisfy the design demand except the grain composition.The test and application of small size spall will expand the scope of utilizing the materials of CFRD and extremely utilize the digged materials ,enhance the economic income of engineers .speed up the progress, and makes great progress in the materials of CFRD.
