Controlling emission is the important task of the present research of diesel. There are many factors effecting the diesel emissions, mainly including intake system, fuel supply system, combustion chamber configuration and fuel property. Most research in the past focused on improving of construction design and optimization of the working parameters of engine. But the fuel property and ingredient effect the diesel emissions directly. With the stricter of the emission regulations, many countries carry legislation of fuel ingredient into execution. The future requirements of fuel property refers to cetane number, distillation range, aroma content, sulfur content, viscosity, density and so on. It is obvious that the requirement of fuel property is higher with the wider application of diesel and the stricter of emission rules. With the deepening study on the combustion process of diesel engine, it's recognized that the combustion process and emission under transient conditions are different from those under steady conditions. Moreover, the engine operates under transient conditions at most of the time. Then, through the research on transient combustion process to reduce transient emissions is important for improving our living environment. Some countries have established transient testing cycles, such as EPA testing cycle method of the USA and ETC of EU. Our country will perform the national standardâ…¢corresponding to EUROâ…¢from the year of 2008. Therefore, the future emission standard will focus on transient conditions. It's obvious that transient conditions of engine become the important investigation fields. The effect of fuel properties, especially the ignition capability and volatility, on the combustion process was analyzed by experiment and simulation methods in this paper.Based on the preparation of nowadays market diesel, we chose straight diesel, cracking gas oil and kerosene as basic fuels and prepared test fuels with different cetane number and volatility. We did steady and transient experiments on a turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine with these fuels. Through the analysis of pressure and heat release curve by combustion analysis software, we study the effects of fuel property on the combustion process macroscopically. We took the engine speed of 1800r/min as an example in this paper, because the other running conditions have the same tendency. Something found from experiments are as follows:...
