This research paper expatiates the developing history of the Metro Environmental Control System, introduces the function, modality and form of MECS. Aim at three modes of MECS—with and without platform Screen doors, characteristic of cooling load and energy consumption of MECS are discussed.The main sources of heat are trig of vehicle, third rail losses, air conditioning in vehicle, metastasis of passengers and stuff, station lighting, electrical equipment, etc. The formulas of calculating heat load are preferred to analyze generating heat and dissipating heat, including theirs quantity and sites.This paper takes Shanghai Metro fro example, gains characteristic of cooling load and energy consumption of MECS by investigating and testing. Factors for some uncertainty heat sources in MECS are analyzed by analyzing and calculating test data. Then it finds the changing trend and function relations between researching objects and their main affected factors. This will be helpful in the field of calculating and simulation for metro cooling loads.The quantity of heat equilibrium theory is posed in order to calculate refrigeration duty and blast volume of air condition. By these basal data, different MECS modality can be compared. This will be helpful for energy saving designing for MECS.In the finality, the problems requiring further studies are discussed.
